How to Unlock a Locked Aadhaar When Your VID Has Expired

Locking your Aadhaar UID can be a useful security measure when you do not need Aadhaar authentication. However, if you later find that your Aadhaar is locked and the Virtual ID (VID) needed to unlock it is no longer usable, the recovery process can become surprisingly difficult.

This guide explains what to do if you encounter a specific UIDAI issue where your Aadhaar is locked, an RVID request returns a VID, but the myAadhaar portal rejects that VID as expired and you cannot generate a usable replacement.

The problem

The normal Aadhaar unlock process requires a valid VID.

A typical recovery attempt looks like this:

1.      Aadhaar UID is locked.

2.      You send RVID <last 4 digits of Aadhaar> to 1947 from your registered mobile number.

3.      UIDAI sends a VID.

4.      You enter the VID on the official myAadhaar Lock/Unlock Aadhaar page.

5.      The portal reports:

“The entered Virtual ID has crossed the expiry duration. Please regenerate the VID and try again.”

The problem becomes a loop:

Aadhaar is locked → a valid VID is required to unlock it → the returned VID is considered expired → a new usable VID cannot be generated → Aadhaar remains locked.

Try the normal UIDAI procedures first

Before escalating the issue, try the standard UIDAI recovery options.

1. Generate a VID using RVID

From your Aadhaar-registered mobile number, send:

RVID <last 4 digits of Aadhaar>

to 1947.

If UIDAI returns a VID but the myAadhaar portal says it has expired, note the exact error.

2. Try GVID

You can also try generating a new VID using the official UIDAI SMS service.

If GVID does not produce a usable VID, record what happens.

3. Try the myAadhaar website

You can also attempt to generate a VID through the official myAadhaar portal.

In some cases, however, a locked Aadhaar can prevent you from completing this process, leaving you unable to generate the VID required to unlock the Aadhaar in the first place.

4. Contact UIDAI on 1947

Call 1947, the official UIDAI helpline.

When explaining the problem, be specific. Instead of simply saying that you cannot unlock Aadhaar, explain that:

·         Your Aadhaar UID is locked.

·         RVID returns a VID.

·         The returned VID is rejected as expired.

·         You cannot generate a new usable VID.

·         You are therefore unable to complete the unlock process.

Ask the representative to create a service request if the issue cannot be resolved during the call.

Raise a UIDAI grievance

If the helpline does not resolve the problem, submit a grievance through UIDAI’s official grievance mechanism.

Include:

·         A description of the problem.

·         The exact error displayed by myAadhaar.

·         The steps you have already tried.

·         Your UIDAI service request number, if one was created.

·         Screenshots showing the error.

Keep the service request number and any acknowledgement details.

If the grievance is closed but the underlying problem remains, do not assume that the technical issue has actually been fixed.

Escalate through CPGRAMS

If UIDAI’s normal support channels close the case without resolving the issue, the next escalation route is CPGRAMS, the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System operated by the Government of India.

CPGRAMS - https://pgportal.gov.in/

When filing the grievance, select Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) as the organisation.

The exact category options can change over time, but the relevant category may be under website, mobile app or toll-free-number related issues, such as myAadhaar portal issues.

What to include in the CPGRAMS complaint

Explain the entire sequence clearly:

1.      Aadhaar UID was locked.

2.      RVID successfully returned a VID.

3.      The myAadhaar unlock facility rejected that VID as expired.

4.      Attempts to generate another VID were unsuccessful.

5.      The required OTP could not be obtained, if applicable.

6.      UIDAI support and/or previous service requests had already been contacted.

7.      Those requests were closed without resolving the underlying problem.

Attach screenshots demonstrating the problem and, where appropriate, screenshots showing previous UIDAI grievance or service-request closures.

Do not include your complete Aadhaar number, VID, OTP or other sensitive authentication information in the complaint attachments unless an official process specifically requires it. Mask sensitive information in screenshots.

What happens after CPGRAMS escalation

A CPGRAMS complaint may be routed to the appropriate UIDAI team for investigation.

For a genuine backend or technical issue, escalation can result in the case reaching a technical team rather than being handled solely through standard customer-support instructions.

If a UIDAI technical representative contacts you, explain the problem exactly as it occurs.

If possible, perform the unlock procedure while speaking with the representative. This allows the technical team to see the actual error rather than assuming that the problem is caused by an incorrect VID or an incorrect procedure.

The technical team may then investigate the VID or UID status from their side and provide an appropriate resolution.

Once a valid VID is available, enter it through the official Aadhaar unlock facility.

If your Aadhaar unlocks successfully

After unlocking the UID, remember that Aadhaar UID locking and biometric locking are separate security controls.

If your biometrics are also locked and you need biometric authentication, you may need to unlock them separately through the official UIDAI facility.

What if an Aadhaar Seva Kendra cannot fix it?

For a backend VID/UID problem, visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra may not necessarily resolve the issue.

If the problem is specifically that UIDAI’s systems are rejecting an otherwise valid recovery process or are unable to generate a usable VID, the issue may require technical intervention rather than an in-person Aadhaar update.

It is therefore worth exhausting the official support and grievance escalation process before making an unnecessary visit.

Recommended escalation path

For this particular problem, the practical escalation path is:

     Try the official RVID procedure.

     Try GVID.

Try generating a VID through myAadhaar.

Call UIDAI at 1947 and explain that you cannot generate or use a valid VID.

     Raise a UIDAI service request/grievance.

     Keep the service request number.

Save screenshots of the error and previous grievance responses.

If UIDAI closes the case without resolving it, file a CPGRAMS grievance against UIDAI.

Include the previous UIDAI service-request numbers in the CPGRAMS complaint.

     Attach appropriately redacted screenshots.

Follow up with the UIDAI team if the complaint is escalated to them.

Confirm that Aadhaar is actually unlocked before considering the matter resolved.

Protect your Aadhaar information

Never publish your full Aadhaar number, VID, OTP or other authentication information in a public forum.

If you need to share screenshots with UIDAI, CPGRAMS or another official organisation, provide only what is necessary and mask sensitive information wherever possible.

Final takeaway

The Aadhaar locking feature can prevent authentication while the UID is locked, but recovery can become complicated if the associated VID enters an unusable state.

The important distinction is between a normal unlock failure and a VID-generation or backend problem. If RVID returns a VID but myAadhaar says that the VID has expired, while attempts to generate a replacement VID also fail, repeatedly following the same basic instructions is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

In that situation, document the issue, obtain a UIDAI service-request number, and escalate through CPGRAMS if the UIDAI grievance is closed without actually resolving the problem.

Most importantly, treat the case as unresolved until you can successfully unlock the Aadhaar through the official UIDAI facility.
